No matter how much buildup the market does for the Union Budget, the fact is this annual exercise rarely creates an opportunity for Dalal Street to sing and dance. Sensex has risen over 1 per cent on a Budget Day on only two of last 12 occasions (including Interim Budgets of 2009 and 2014). It has fallen between 1 and 6 per cent on four occasions in last 12 and risen more than 1 per cent on two. The best return for Sensex on a Budget Day in last 10 years was in 2017, when it had jumped 1.76 per cent. Volatility tends to decline as all the uncertainty around it gets over.
